Philosophers have always tended to harbour some uncertainty about the goals, methods and achievements of the philosophical enterprise. This is as it should be. Dogmatism is not a hallmark of good philosophy and philosophers, as a rule, are a pretty self-critical bunch. It is good for us to realise how horribly wrong we could be or that philosophy might be a waste of time– or worse. Thinking about philosophy keeps (or should keep) philosophers honest.
